Laser welding is used in the automotive industry

In the automotive industry, there has been a trend for many years. Passenger car gearboxes are becoming smaller and lighter, and speed and gear components continue to increase.

A closer look at the various components can find the answer. For example, a gear consists of two components connected by laser welding. This allows automotive design engineers to work without the use of screws and reduces the weight of overall parts.

These benefits explain why laser welding has become the core process of gearbox manufacturing. However, there are many other processes before and after the actual laser welding process, which may make it difficult to integrate laser welding into a complete production line.

Depending on the components, these may include inspection before laser welding, cleaning and/or connecting the components, as well as the welding process and the final ultrasonic inspection.
